Yearlings are commonly defined as simply a young goat between the ages of 1 and 2 years old. We add a few more factors to the equation at Lorberau Legacy Farms with more age breakdown for manageability. We consider our kids "juniors" once they are weaned, but before they reach breeding age. Our doelings are then reclassified as "Jr. Yearlings" once they reach breedable age and weight for our operational standards.
To reach Jr. Yearling status, our doelings must first be no less than 1 year old at the time of kidding for the first time. We also require doelings to be 80 pounds before we breed them. If a doeling is 7 months old AND weighs at least 80 pounds, we no longer call them a "Junior" and now consider them a "Jr. Yearling" of breeding age. Still, if the timing of these two criteria put us out of our kidding window for the year or we feel a doeling simply needs more development before becoming a mom, we hold her back until the next breeding season. Anyone from one year old to two years old who has never freshened before are referred to as "Yearlings".
For simplification, we have listed all "Juniors", "Jr. Yearlings", and "Yearlings" as "Juniors" on this page. We are so proud of all of them and greatly anticipate their maturity being revealed!

Until our young ones are weaned, we called them "Kids." Because that's what they are. They are young and free and believe they can do anything! And we pretty much let them. We usually wean our kids between 12 and 16 weeks of age. Regardless of the exact weaning age, once they are weaned, they graduate to "Junior" status.
